A shot taken from Gnome Tarn in August '03.
Now this one is a beautiful fish and is still swimming about, hopefully several inches longer than the 23 it measured to win the 2002 Hi-Laker Kingfish award. Pictures showed that I caught it both days I was at the lake above 4000′ somewhere in Washington State. Took an egg pattern on a short line the first day and my trusty Thomas Bouyant (gold 1/4 oz.) the second.
Thanks Ken. As I recall it did pull and spin me a bit.
Thought I’d add this snake of a specimen to this wonderful collection not because it was a beautiful fish (though it tasted most excellent!), but because it was long enough- at 24.5″- to take the first Hi-Laker Kingfish award of the current millenium. Caught with a gold quarter oz. Thomas Bouyant while spin casting from my tube in a lake at around 4000′ on my last cast of the evening. Drug it in without alot of fight. Photo by Sandy McKean.

“I thought the day trip I made to the Mildred's last Sept. was well worthwhile. Of course you must keep in mind the fall colors were optimum and we lucked into a gorgeous day so the scenery was fantastic; midsummer may mean a flower show that tops the conditions I encounted. Spent the majority of the available fishing time rafting in Far Mildred with only a short casting session in First and Big. The fish in Far were adaquate in number and size, though I never did catch the one that gulped down the stray apple core despite a frenzied attemp after the surprize attack. I'd go again if I had time to spend a night or two.”
“DJH^^^^Any surface action at Lenice, or was it a wet line show?”
“Salish- I ordered a dozen 1/4 oz. brass Z-Rays w/red spots. I’ll bring them to both next Wed. HL’er meeting and the Nov. TB’er meeting. Wish I’d had a chance to talk a bit to you at the TB’er meeting, but Milt kept my attention with many great stories of the old days.”
“Great website Salish! I’ve gotta have some Z-Rays after reading about the success this couple has with them. Maybe this lure will outfish my alltime favorite, the 1/4 oz. gold Thomas Bouyant. Anybody like-minded and want to split a dozen 1/4 oz. Brass Z-Rays with red spots so we don’t both have to pay the $6.50 shipping charge? Lemeno.”
“Randy, I think I talked to you on Tuesday between the first and big Mildreds (was with another guy heading out past where you were camped). I didn’t get a chance to see your post before I left or I’d have introduced myself. We caught a few cutthroat to 13 in the far lake, but had no luck in the first or big lakes. Hope you had a good trip too.”””
“I’m planning a day hike to Mildred Lakes on Tuesday, Oct 3, if weather permits. It’ll be my first trip up there, so I won’t have answers to your ? till Wed.”
“I slept under a clear sky at Obstruction Point near Hurricane Ridge on Sunday night. After the Leonids of this past winter, the Perseids were somewhat disappointing, although I saw more meteors than on a normal night; say 3-4 per 15 minutes of viewing. I missed the aurora borealis which some saw around 11 PM that same night and reported on NW Hiker. Dang, must have dozed off!”
“Did you get a picture of the lunker you couldn’t get in the raft? You could post it on the HL’er site. How big was he? I have yet to catch a golden, but played one for awhile a few years back, and wondered about the wierd yellow coloration I saw untill I talked to someone about it at a HL’er meeting. Rainbows are the top for me, because they often take dry flies and usually make a jump or two, like they did at an Olympics lake I fished last week. And of course brookies are at the bottom, only because I don’t know where to find ones larger than about 10. Cutthroat are the staple for me, and make most hikes worthwhile.”””
“I would think Lime Ridge in the Glacier Peak Wilderness deserves mention in this thread. Its been over 20 yrs. since I was there, but I remember it being spectacular.”
“Thanks for the report Salish. Could you have your friend climb Mt. Chaval this weekend so I could have an ice report on Boulder, Crater, and Chaval? (grin). Really, what does anyone think of these lakes being open by Monday? What about Bench, Woods and Slim? I suppose I better stay in the Olympics till hydro weekend, just to be certain of fishable water…..then again I do have my Curtis icebreaker…. (grin).”
I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at a lake that was 40% open at 5500′ in the NE Olympics. I enjoyed beautiful sunshine while catching 8″-10″ CT from my Curtis raft in addition to 360 degree views and a 99% moon from the ridge at 6200′ where I camped. Floating around with the lake ice made the whole experience quite surreal. I plan to scope out a 6000′ lake across the valley in a week or two.:D
