What about a possible hybrid between regular Curtis raft material and Cuben material?

Maybe under raft update it should say “one more raft finished”?

Tony – If you try it be really careful – They are talking sustained winds 40-50 knots which is closing in on 60 mph. If it’s blowing that hard you won’t be able to cast and you’ll get blown wherever the wind wants you to go. Trolling a bugger would be about the only possibility.

I always recommend anchoring bow and stern for a boat. I have a 9 lb on the bow and a 7 lb on the stern. If you have to use only one anchor you’ll be swinging around a lot. Wind hitting you from the side could be a problem. You always want to cast down wind when fishing chironomids so you can keep your line straight. So with one anchor you’ll be casting off your side. I use a med. size indicator, maybe a 1/2 inch dia.? If it’s choppy the larger one is easier to see. Calm water lets you use a smaller one.

Jim – If you’re going to the social just bring them then. If not get them to someone who is going.

Tyler, this is a Hi Lakers outing, but anyone can fish. If you have a friend who wants to fish with you that’s great. We won’t be able to absorb a ton of non members as far as food goes, but I’m sure we can figure something out.

Bob – Yes, there are loons on every lake I’ve been to. They are so wonderful to listen to late at night. I’ve seen bald eagles go for ducklings and lots of black bear hunting for dead fish (those which did not revive after being caught). My best encounter was with a trio of loons. I saw 3 of them in a group which was somewhat unusual – they almost always are in pairs. They had all moved way down lake from where I was standing in my pram. When I looked up – some noise caught my attention I think, one of them was flying straight at me at high speed, chest high. It kept coming and coming closer like a guided missile and when it was just about to hit me it flared out and hit the water and got me all wet and dived down. If it was supposed to be some kind of intimidation move it worked. They are big birds and it would have taken me out of the boat easily. A bad way to go.

Even downpours are not bad as long as they don’t come with wind. There is always a bailing bucket 😆

Kathy – In the spring it’s chironomids, in the fall it’s leaches. Some of the lakes are fly fishing only, but most are just no bait and single barbless artificials only. Either all catch and release, one fish or 2 fish limits on the lakes I fish. Lakes with 5 fish limits will not have large fish. The lakes do fish well in the fall. Oct could be getting into crap weather that far north.

I just turned 62 and found out that I now get the America the Beautiful pass which gets me free access to federal areas and half price at forest service campgrounds. And I don’t have to buy any more trailhead parking passes. All for nothing. REI pays for it’s older folks as a perk. Most though, it only costs 10 bucks for life.
                              BTW, Happy Birthday Sandy!

Terry – it’s called Uni Stretch. Get white. A spool will last you the rest of your fly tying days. All fly shops should have it. It works really well – the best I’ve found. I double a 1″ piece around the thread and tie it down in front of the bead with 8/0 thread. Use a minimum of thread wraps so the bead will still go over it. Cut it off about the length of the bead or a little longer. Gills are prominent on chironomids. All the hot shot chironomid fishermen up in BC think it essential to have them on the fly and I think it’s fun to tie them in so I do it on all my ties.
