Kathy – I’m not talking about the “depth” of the bag, but rather the distance from the near end to the far end of the rim of the net. The bag is only 14″ deep. It’s a catch and release type net bag. I’ve found that too deep a bag makes it difficult to get the fish out. They can get buried way down there. My net is also the ghost net material which is a rubber material. Hooks and fish teeth don’t get caught up in it. This is what it looks like.

Jed – This year I think I was right on. I think the good chironomid fishing would have lasted for another week or two. The guys up there said that last year it really tapered off after the first week of June. These are guys who have been sitting at the lake for 3 and 4 weeks for some of them. They do this each year so have a pretty good feel for how it goes during the season. I could have ALWAYS have fished for longer 😀 The last day I was there the caddis had started to hatch and there were big sedges buzzing around. The fish didn’t seem to be keyed on them yet. I didn’t see that fish for the first ten minutes or so. Just a lot of backing. I was fortunate to be fairly alone so I didn’t have to worry about getting into someone’s anchor line. You don’t anchor as closely as the guys do at, say, Pass Lk. You’d loose every fish hooked. No one anchors closer than 100 – 150 feet here. Most guys ask if they are far enough away from you when they move in to anchor. The fish I had on the last day was out 100 yards before he broke me off. I should say “before SHE broke me off” as they are all female triploids. Here’s another shot of the biggest one. The inside measurement of the net rim is 24″. I think Kathy mentioned having a big net. It seems big ’till you try to put a really big fish in it.

Cheryl, Kim and myself should be paid up now. We’ll be in early Sunday morning to cook up some omelets and hopefully see if there are any fish that haven’t been terrorized yet by the masses on Sat!

Hate to disappoint you Mike, but I found that tracker unit and stuck it on the belly of a local wolverine I was talking to one evening. Who knows where he may have wandered off to? 😆

I have to correct what I wrote before regarding the weight. I got to thinking about that at work today and re-weighed them. My weight was for one shoe. 5.1 oz for the pair of men’s 9’s. And yes you can feel everything through the bottoms. It’s the true barefoot experience!

The shoes that Sandy is referring to are the ZEM barefoot shoes. They have a thin “sole” on them and go on like an Aqua Sock. 2.8 oz. for a men’s size 9. Not as much protection as one with a thicker sole, but 2.8 oz.!!! $58.00

Sandy – It’s good for them to be a little defiant as this gets the bigger fish a little sideways and they are more apt to snap at them. Really!
Mike – The knot I use is called a “no slip loop knot” and I always use it for all my chironomids and other sub surface flies. It’s the one I learned from Brian Chan (my hero). I just tie the dropper with an improved clinch knot to the bend of the upper fly. Works fine and a lot less chance of getting tangled.
And it uses less of the expensive florocarbon leader.

That’s a great list of lakes! Not just frog ponds. Come on snow – MELT!

Mike – You’re gonna get me started here. I use both curved scud type and nymph hooks. Daiichi 1150’s and Mustad C49S are good ones. I much prefer a straight eye or up eye hook. TMC makes a scud hook, but I don’t use them because they have a down eye and I think it closes the gape down too much and misses grabs. It might not, but if I think that I won’t fish them with the same confidence. And we all know good vibes in what you’re using is a big part of fishing success. I also use a lot of TMC 5262 nymph hooks. They are heavy and strong and as you say you can tie down the bend and get a curved look. You have to be careful when you’re using smaller sizes (16-18) that you don’t put too much material down the bend as it will close the gape area and make it so the hook cannot penetrate in as well.
The coating on the fly body that I do makes them look pretty, but is there mostly for durability. Trout teeth can chew chironomids up in short order.

Here’s a shot of what happens to non-coated bugs after battling several big kamloops rainbows.

Kent – I will certainly let all of you folks know in time. I believe that it will be in mid June (23rd?). I’ll post a notice for sure.

Mike, I’ve been messing around with some of the English Buzzer patterns and they often have the wing buds added as orange or red like this:

Bob – at least I’d get one vote!

Rodney – I’ll second Jed’s recommendation of the Rampart Lakes, though I’d go in via the Rachel Lake trail.(No off trail that way) We took our girls in on a 4 day trip to Rachel and the Rampart lakes when they were 5 and 6 years old and they did fine. When on Rampart Ridge you can go south to the Ramparts or to the north to Lila Lk. The Ramparts are good fishing and easy to get around. They’ve been described as the little enchantments.
Also, I’d add Anderson and Watson lakes up east of Baker Lake. About 3 miles into either set of lakes and we were into them when the girls were 2 and 3. And up in that area, west of Baker Lk is Blue lake. A mile and full of brookies.

Yes, Eric. BC is just over a month away. A chironomider’s paradise! And central Oregon just after that.
Kathy. We humans and baked beans are not the only generators of gas 😆
